The Mystery: Christ Lives in You!
A secret too good to keep
Paul says something that sounds strange at first: he is happy to suffer for the Colossians! Why? Because Paul knew his sufferings were part of serving the church, and nothing — not prison, not pain — could stop the gospel from spreading.
God gave Paul a special job: to fully tell people the WORD OF GOD, including a mystery hidden for ages but now revealed: CHRIST IN YOU — the hope of glory! Not Christ far away in heaven only, but Christ living INSIDE every believer, right now. Paul worked hard, struggling with all the energy Christ powerfully worked in him, so that every believer would not be deceived by fine-sounding arguments that lead people away from the truth.
So Paul gives one clear instruction to close this section: just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, keep on walking in Him — ROOTED and BUILT UP in the faith, just as you were taught, overflowing with thankfulness. A tree with deep roots doesn't get blown over by every clever-sounding wind of teaching.

Big idea: the indwelling of Christ in the believer — the central mystery of the New Testament — and the call to be rooted and built up, closing out this whole section on Paul's labor for the church (1:24-2:7). Note this standard section actually crosses the chapter 1/2 boundary in the original text; verses 2:6-7 belong with this unit, not with what follows, since they form Paul's concluding instruction to the readers he's just described laboring for.
Conversation starters: (1) What does it mean that Christ actually lives inside you, not just watches from far away? (2) What does being "rooted and built up" protect you from? (3) Who labors and prays for your spiritual growth, the way Paul did for the Colossians?
