A debt cancelled, and a trap to avoid
Paul now warns: watch out for hollow and deceptive philosophy that depends on human tradition rather than on Christ. In Christ, ALL the fullness of God lives in a real human body — and because you are united with Christ, you too have been brought to fullness! Paul uses a deep picture: just as a person is physically circumcised, you were spiritually circumcised — not by human hands, but by Christ Himself, cutting away the old sinful nature, the moment you were buried with Him through faith and raised to new life!
God CANCELLED the debt we owed because of sin, nailing the record of wrongs to the cross! Jesus disarmed every evil power, triumphing over them publicly.
Then Paul applies this freedom directly: don't let anyone judge you by food, drink, or special religious days — these were only SHADOWS; the reality is Christ! And watch for people who seem extra spiritual but have lost connection to the HEAD, Christ — like a hand disconnected from the body.
Even rules that sound very holy, like 'don't touch this, don't taste that,' have no power at all to stop sinful desires. True holiness was never about a list of human-made rules — it's about staying connected to Christ, who alone gives real life and victory over sin.

Big idea: this is one continuous standard section (2:8-23) in the original text — the warning against hollow philosophy, the spiritual circumcision of the heart, the cancelled debt, AND the warning against legalistic human rules all belong together as a single argument: real freedom in Christ, attacked from two directions — philosophical-sounding deception on one side, rule-based legalism on the other. Read together as intended, Paul's point sharpens: don't trade the fullness you already have in Christ for either error.
The "circumcision...done by Christ" (2:11) pictures an inward, decisive cutting-away of the sinful nature by God's own act — paralleling sanctifying grace received by faith, not self-effort. The image of being connected to "the Head" (2:19) shows that genuine holiness flows from relationship with Christ, never from a checklist with "no power" against sinful desires (2:23).
