Chosen and Loved

Ephesians 1:3-6 / Efesios 1:3-6

A letter from prison — and a love that chose us first!

Paul was in prison in Rome, chained to a guard. But instead of a sad letter, he wrote one of the most JOYFUL letters ever! Why? Because Paul knew a truth that no prison could take away: God loved us and chose us FIRST. Before God made the world, He already knew every person who would turn from their sins and say YES to Jesus — and He called them His own, His beloved children. That means God's love came BEFORE we did anything right!

But notice — God's choosing is not like a king who forces people to come to his palace whether they want to or not. God's love is an invitation: He knocks, He calls, He draws — and every person must choose to open the door. Have you opened that door? Have you turned from your sins and said YES to Jesus? Because it is those who respond to His love who walk in His blessing. You were on God's mind before the stars were lit — and He is calling your name TODAY!

Big idea: God's gracious initiative requires our response.

Scripture holds that God, in His foreknowledge, chose those who would respond to His love in repentance and faith — not an unconditional election that bypasses human choice, but a divine love that precedes and enables our response. "He chose us" (Eph 1:4) points to God's initiative; "adoption through Jesus Christ" (1:5) is received by faith. This matters enormously for how we raise children: we don't tell them they are automatically saved because of a prayer someone prayed over them; we call them to genuine repentance and saving faith.

Conversation starters: (1) If God loved us before we did anything right, how should that make us feel — AND how should it make us want to live? (2) What is the difference between being chosen and being forced? Why does God give us the choice? (3) Have YOU personally turned from your sins and opened the door to Jesus? Take time tonight for each family member to answer this question honestly.

Pray together — and if any child has never truly repented and surrendered, lead them to do so now.
