Children of light — a holy, separated life
Paul says something extraordinary: you were once DARKNESS — not just in the dark, but darkness itself. But now you ARE light in the Lord. This is not just a poetic image — it is a complete change of nature. And children of light are DIFFERENT from the world around them. Paul says imitate GOD — walk in love as Christ loved us — and that means a HOLY life, separated from everything that belongs to the darkness. Some things that the world does casually — impure words, ungodly entertainment, things done in secret that cannot be spoken in the light — Paul says have nothing to do with them. Not because God is trying to make life miserable, but because children of light are called to a different and higher standard. Light exposes darkness — don't join the darkness, SHINE. And how do you shine? Paul gives the recipe: walk carefully, make the most of every opportunity, be filled with the Holy Spirit, sing and make music from your heart, and give thanks ALWAYS — for everything. Children of light live at a different altitude than the world around them. And the world will notice.

Big idea: Holiness as separation and consecration — one of Scripture's most visible distinctives.
Scripture calls believers to an emphasis on holy, separated living: modest dress, avoidance of worldly entertainment, no compromise with the culture of the age. This is rooted in scripture: Eph 5:1-10 calls believers to 'have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness' (5:11) and to 'find out what pleases the Lord' (5:10).
Note that Paul doesn't say avoid darkness because it might harm you — he says you ARE light, and light and darkness are incompatible. Sanctification (holiness) is not about following a list of rules; it is about living according to your new nature. But
Scripture insists that this new nature has VISIBLE CONSEQUENCES in lifestyle.
Conversation starters: (1) What are some things the world treats as normal that a child of light should have nothing to do with? Discuss honestly as a family. (2) 'Light exposes darkness' — has your life ever made someone around you uncomfortable because it showed up their wrong? What happened? (3) What would it mean for OUR FAMILY to be known in our neighbourhood as children of light — visibly different, visibly holy? What would need to change?
