Pains of childbirth, all over again
Paul now speaks with raw, personal emotion. Before they knew God, the Galatians were enslaved to things that aren't even real gods.
But now that they know the true God — or rather, are known by Him — why would they want to turn BACK to weak and miserable rules and rituals, becoming enslaved all over again? Paul is deeply troubled: he fears all his hard work among them might have been wasted! He reminds them how warmly they once welcomed him, even when he arrived sick — they treated him like an angel of God, even like Christ Himself.
What happened to all that joy? Has he now become their enemy just for telling them the truth?
Then Paul says something tender and vulnerable: 'My dear children, I am again in the pains of childbirth for you, until Christ is formed in you!' Like a mother going through labor all over again for the same child, Paul is willing to suffer again, hoping to see real spiritual maturity — Christ's character actually formed in them — rather than empty rule-following that looks impressive but changes nothing inside.
