An Anchor for the Soul
A promise sealed with an oath
After that heavy warning, the writer reminds us of something wonderfully secure: God's promise to Abraham. When God promised Abraham a future and a family, He confirmed it with an OATH, since there was no one greater to swear by — God swore by Himself! He did this so that, by two unchangeable things — His promise and His oath — we who have fled to Him for refuge might be greatly encouraged to hold firmly to the hope set before us.
This hope is an ANCHOR for the soul, firm and secure, going right into the inner sanctuary itself, where Jesus, our forerunner, has already entered on our behalf. Think of a ship in a storm — the anchor doesn't stop the waves, but holds the ship steady, connected to solid ground beneath the surf.
