A Priest Forever
The mysterious king-priest
Long before Israel had priests from the tribe of Levi, there was a mysterious figure named Melchizedek — king of Salem and priest of God Most High — who blessed Abraham. The writer uses this as a picture: Jesus is a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek — not by family lineage, but by the power of an indestructible life!
The regular priests had to offer sacrifices again and again because they were sinful men who eventually died.
But Jesus, because He lives forever, holds His priesthood permanently, and is able to save COMPLETELY those who come to God through Him! He always lives to intercede for us. Unlike priests who needed daily sacrifice for their own sins, Jesus was without sin, and offered Himself ONCE, fully sufficient for all time.

Big idea: Christ's eternal, sufficient priesthood — He never stops interceding, His sacrifice never repeats. The Melchizedek typology argues Christ's priesthood is superior by an indestructible life (7:16), not lineage.
