A Brand New Covenant
A promise of a changed heart
The writer now shows something amazing: God promised, through the prophet Jeremiah, a NEW COVENANT — not like the old one given at Mount Sinai. This new covenant would mean God's law written on people's HEARTS, not just stone tablets, and complete forgiveness — God promising to remember our sins NO MORE!
Jesus is the mediator of this better covenant, established on better promises. If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need to look for another. By calling this covenant 'new,' God made the old one obsolete — not because it was a mistake, but because it always pointed forward to something greater, the way a shadow points to the object that casts it.
