I Do Believe — Help My Unbelief!
A desperate father, an honest prayer
Coming down the mountain, Jesus found a large crowd and His other disciples arguing with teachers of the law — they had tried and failed to heal a boy with a severe, violent spirit that threw him into convulsions. The boy's father explained, exhausted, then said: 'If you can do anything, take pity on us!' Jesus replied: 'If you can?! Everything is possible for one who believes.' The father cried out, with raw honesty: 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!' Jesus commanded the spirit to come out, and it did, with a violent convulsion, leaving the boy looking dead — but Jesus took his hand and lifted him up, completely well!
Privately, the disciples asked why THEY couldn't drive it out. Jesus said: 'This kind can come out only by prayer.' Then Jesus again told them plainly that He would be betrayed, killed, and rise after three days — but they still didn't understand, and were afraid to ask Him about it.
