Two Small Coins, Everything She Had
A poor widow's enormous gift
Jesus posed a puzzling question about how the Messiah could be both David's son and David's Lord, quoting David's own psalm — the large crowd listened with delight!
Then Jesus warned about the teachers of the law, who loved walking around in flowing robes, being greeted with respect, having the best seats — yet who devoured widows' houses while making lengthy prayers for show. 'Such men will be punished most severely,' Jesus said. Then, sitting opposite the temple treasury, Jesus watched people putting in their gifts — many rich people gave large amounts.
But a poor widow came and put in just TWO small copper coins, worth very little. Jesus called His disciples and said: 'Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on.' The size of the gift wasn't what mattered to Jesus — it was the size of the sacrifice behind it.

Big idea: God measures giving not by the absolute amount but by the sacrifice and trust behind it — the widow's two tiny coins represented far greater faith and generosity than the wealthy givers' larger but comparatively painless contributions. This directly follows Jesus' warning against showy, self-serving religiosity, contrasting hollow public piety with quiet, costly, genuine devotion.
Conversation starters: (1) Why does Jesus value the widow's tiny gift more than the wealthy people's larger gifts? (2) What's the difference between giving out of "wealth" versus giving out of genuine sacrifice? (3) What would it look like for you to give sacrificially, not just give what's easy?
