Three Times Before the Rooster Crowed
A trial of lies, a courtyard of fear
Jesus was brought before the Sanhedrin, the high council, where the chief priests sought testimony to put Him to death — but the false witnesses contradicted each other.
Finally the high priest asked directly: 'Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?' Jesus answered: 'I am... and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.' The high priest tore his clothes, calling it blasphemy, and they all condemned Him to death, spitting on Him and striking Him.
Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. A servant girl recognised him: 'You were with Jesus.' Peter denied it. It happened again.
Then a third time, others insisted he was a Galilean, one of Jesus' followers — Peter denied it strongly, even calling down curses on himself! Immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered Jesus' words exactly — three denials, before the rooster crowed twice — and broke down and WEPT.
The man who had promised he'd never fall away had failed completely, exactly as Jesus had said.

Big idea: Jesus' bold, truthful confession before the council — knowing it would seal His death sentence — stands in painful contrast to Peter's fearful denials in the courtyard below, happening at nearly the same moment. Peter's bitter weeping, rather than excusing or hiding his failure, models genuine, broken-hearted repentance, which Mark's later resurrection account will show was not the end of Peter's story.
Conversation starters: (1) Why might Jesus answer truthfully, knowing it would lead to His condemnation? (2) What does Peter's reaction — weeping, not making excuses — show about genuine repentance? (3) Have you ever failed at something you were confident you'd never do, the way Peter did?
Pray for courage to stand firm under pressure, and grace for the moments when we fail like Peter did.
