Paul warns: watch out for those who insist you need extra religious credentials, like circumcision, to truly belong to God! 'WE,' Paul says, are the true circumcision — those who worship by the Spirit, glory in Christ Jesus, and put NO confidence in human effort or status. And Paul should know — he had every impressive credential anyone could want: born into the right family, the right tribe, trained perfectly in the law, zealous beyond most, blameless by every external measure!
But Paul says: whatever was a gain to him, he now considers a LOSS, for the sake of Christ. In fact, he considers EVERYTHING a loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord — he even calls his old credentials GARBAGE, so that he might gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness earned by the law, but the righteousness that comes through FAITH in Christ.
Paul's deepest desire wasn't more achievements — it was to know Christ, to know the power of His resurrection, and even to share in His sufferings.
