Trust with all your heart, not just part of it
Don't forget the teaching, the father urges, but keep these commands in your heart — they will bring you long life, peace, and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you.
Then comes one of the most quoted verses in the entire Bible: 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.'
Notice the contrast: trusting God FULLY versus leaning on your OWN understanding. Our own wisdom, however clever it feels, is never enough on its own. We need God's guidance over our own.
The chapter continues: don't be wise in your own eyes — instead, fear the Lord and shun evil, and this will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Honour the Lord with your wealth, and trust Him even with the resources you have.
Finally, don't despise the Lord's discipline, because the Lord disciplines those He loves, just as a father disciplines the child he delights in. Even correction is a sign of love, not rejection.
