Keep sound judgment and discernment, the father urges, and they will be life for you — they will keep you safe so you can go on your way unharmed, your foot will not stumble.
When you lie down, you won't be afraid — your sleep will be sweet! Don't be afraid of sudden disaster, because the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.
Don't withhold good from those who deserve it, when it's in your power to act. Don't tell a neighbour, 'Come back tomorrow' when you could help them right now.
Don't plot harm against your neighbour who trusts you and lives nearby. Don't envy violent or wicked people, or choose any of their ways, because the Lord detests the perverse but takes the upright into His confidence.
The chapter closes with one of the book's clearest contrasts: the Lord's curse is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the righteous. He mocks proud mockers but shows favour to the humble.

The closing contrast between blessing on the righteous and curse on the wicked sets up a pattern that runs throughout the book's many short proverbs that follow.
