What you protect determines what you become
'My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one's whole body.'
Then comes one of the most famous instructions in the entire book: 'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.'
Think about that phrase carefully — EVERYTHING you do flows from your heart. Not just some things, not just the big decisions — everything. Your actions are downstream of what's actually happening inside you.
The chapter gets specific: put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.
Make level paths for your feet, and take only ways that are firm. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Heart, mouth, eyes, feet — the whole person is called to careful, deliberate guarding.
