'Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.' Proverbs is honest about the danger of putting too much confidence in money — it simply isn't sturdy enough to lean on fully.
'Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.' Quantity isn't the point — Proverbs consistently cares more about HOW wealth is gained than how much of it exists.
One of the most countercultural verses in the whole book: 'a good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.' Character and reputation, Proverbs insists, outweigh wealth itself.
'The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.' Proverbs is realistic about how money creates power dynamics, encouraging wisdom about debt and financial dependence.
A vivid warning closes this theme: 'do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off, like an eagle, into the sky.' Wealth, Proverbs warns, is far less permanent than it appears.
