You plan, but God directs
'To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.' Even our best thinking, Proverbs suggests, needs God's involvement to truly land right.
'Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.' Notice the order — commit FIRST, and establishment follows; not the other way around.
One of the clearest statements of God's sovereignty over human planning: 'in their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.' We can plan all we want — but God is the one who ultimately directs where our steps actually land.
'The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.' Even things that feel random or up to chance, Proverbs says, are ultimately under God's careful direction.
'Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.' This theme isn't meant to discourage planning — it's meant to give genuine peace, knowing that even when our plans change unexpectedly, God's purpose is still the one that ultimately wins out.

Big idea: human planning and divine sovereignty are held together without contradiction — Proverbs neither discourages thoughtful planning nor pretends humans control outcomes; instead it offers genuine peace in knowing God's purpose ultimately prevails, even through (and sometimes despite) our own plans.
